Vijay Ramniklal Rupani was born on the 2nd of August 1956 in Rangoon now Yangon in Myanmar. His father Ramniklal and mother Mayaben were in business in Burma. Vijay Rupani Career
In 1971 he entered politics through joining the Jan Sangh and RSS. He was also arrested in the Emergency of 1976 and spent 11 months in jails at Bhuj and Bhavnagar. Vijay’s had been a full time RSS Pracharak between 1978 and 1981. He was a corporator of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation since 1987. He was the late member of the Standing Committee elected. In 1996 and until 1997 he became the Mayor of Rajkot.
In 2006, he was employed as the Chairman of Gujarat Tourism. He was also elected an MP in the Rajya Sabha the same year where he was to serve until 2012. Vijay’s has won the by-election in 2014 and became an MLA of Rajkot West. He was elected to the government cabinet as part of the government of Anandiben Patel. There he served as the Minister of Transport, Water Supply, Labour and Employment. In the year February 2016 he became the president of Gujarat BJP.
He took over the office of the 16 th Chief Minister of Gujarat on August 7 2016. His also secured victory in the 2017 assembly elections under the party and was in the office in the post of CM till September 11 2021. He was then made the BJP in charge of Punjab and Chandigarh.

Vijay Rupani Achievements
He began a new project the SAUNI Yojana to supply water to the arid regions of Saurashtra as Chief Minister. This helped farmers a lot. He initiated the Digital Seva Setu program to bring internet services to villages. He initiated water conservation through Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan. His Gujarat Industrial Policy 2020 led to the influx of new firms to the state and job creation. He is the Tourism Chairman and came up with the Khushboo Gujarat Ki campaign featuring Amitabh Bachchan thus turning Gujarat into a tourist destination. His also dealt with the Patidar agitation at a cool pace without allowing violence to spread. He did his best to establish oxygen plants and hospitals during COVID.

He died on June 12, 2025. He was a passenger on the Air India Flight 171 that was flying to London from Ahmedabad. This was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The airplane crashed shortly after take off Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and hit a hostel of the BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad. All those on the board were killed and 38 on the ground were killed as well. The DNA testing revealed his body. He was buried with full state honours in Rajkot. His funeral was attended by many of his best leaders. Interestingly Vijay thought that he was lucky in the number 1206 and had numerous vehicles that were registered under the number 1206. He died on 12-06 which is 12 June.
